Mary Prokes, 57

Mary Jane Prokes, 57, of Heber Springs, AR, died Thursday, July 18, at her home after a courageous 11-year battle with cancer.

Mary was born March 4, 1956, in New Prague, a daughter of Emil and Marcella (Stepka) Prokes. She attended St Wenceslaus Catholic School and New Prague High School. After graduation in 1974, she joined the U.S. Air Force, working as a Military Police Officer, and was stationed in North Dakota, Italy, Korea, Arkansas and Texas. She retired after 20 years of military service to Heber Springs. She enjoyed taking in and caring for her many rescue dogs, gardening, being outdoors, playing cards, visiting her mother, and spending time with family and friends.

She is survived by her mother, Marcella Prokes; life partner, Sharon (Burris) Prokes; stepchildren Jerry Lee (Maria) Burris and Angela Burris; grandson Landon Burris; siblings Ed (Laura) Prokes, Mike (Debbie) Prokes, and Donna (Larry) Stresnak; nine nieces and nephews, and six greatnieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Emil Prokes, and grandparents Mathias and Mary Prokes and Frank and Mary Stepka.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to American Cancer Society or Animal Humane Society.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at St Wenceslaus Catholic Church, with visitation one hour prior to services at the church.
