Montgomery Cancer Classic raises $8,000 for the cause

More than 100 golfers hit the links and scored in a cancer fundraiser held Saturday, June 17 at the Montgomery Golf Club.

The fifth annual Montgomery Cancer Classic raised more than $8,000 for the American Cancer Society, with funds to be used for breast cancer education, awareness, advocacy and patient services. Prior to the successful event on June 17, the classic had raised in excess of $30,000 since its inception in 2002.

The event had many supporters in addition to the golfers. There were 43 hole sponsors at $100 each, and numerous prizes donated by businesses and individuals for a drawing and a silent auction.

Major sponsor of the classic was again Waste Management of Southern Minnesota. Fred’s IGA Foods of Montgomery and Lonsdale donated the hams for the dinner, and Dave Houser of New Prague donated his services for the day, with golfers given an opportunity to buy one of his long drives on hole No. 1 for a contribution to the cancer society.

The winning foursome in the four-person scramble tournament consisted of Tom Nikunnen, Bob Lenzen, Kevin Adamek and Bob Wolf, a team sponsored by RE/MAX Performance Plus of Jordan.

The winning teams, golfing prize winners and drawing winners were announced during a short program following dinner.
