Montgomery tops New Market for state berth

Dalton Zeug drove in Johnny Krocak with a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to give the Montgomery Mallards a 5-4 win over New Market in the semifinals of the Region 3C tournament. The win guarantees the Mallards a berth in the State Class C Baseball Tournament. It is Montgomery's first state berth since 2002.
Ryan Iverson’s two-run homer in the eighth inning gave the Mallards a 4-3 lead, but the Muskies scored on an RBI single by Kyle Henkemeyer to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth.
Krocak and Eric Iverson also had RBI singles for Montgomery.
Ted Christian started for Montgomery and went eight-plus innings. Jaron Christensen came on with two on and no one out in the eighth and got the win.
Derek Bergstrom started for New Market and went the distance in taking the loss.
Montgomery will play at least two more games in the Region 3C tournament. Their next game will be against either Prior Lake or Union Hill on Sunday, with date and time to be determined. New Market will face either Shakopee or St. Patrick in an elimination game Friday, Aug. 5, at a site and time to be determined. The winner of that game will advance to state.
The State Class C Baseball Tournament will begin Friday, Aug. 19, in Dassel and Hutchinson.
