New Market, St. Patrick win close DRS contests

New Market, St. Patrick, New Prague and Elko were winners on the first day of the Dakota-Rice-Scott Baseball season. Three of the seven games scheduled for opening weekend were postponed due to poor field conditions.

Sunday, April 28 Muskies 9, Saints 7 New Market prevailed over St. Benedict 9-7 in Elko Sunday. The game was moved to Elko due to poor field conditions in New Market.

The Muskies had leads of 5-0 and 7-5, but both times the Saints came back to tie the game.

The game was tied 7-7 in the eighth when Scotty Lyden singled with one out in the eight, then stole second. Kyle Bergstrom reached on a two-out error, scoring Lyden, then pinch-runner Nate Novak scored on a hit by Nate Rost.

Rost got the scoring started with a bases-loaded double to drive in two runs in the first inning, as New Market took a 4-0 lead.

Derek Bergstrom, Nick Rost, Nate Rost and Kyle Bergstrom pitched for New Market, with Kyle Bergstrom going the final two innings for the win. Chris Hartman, Jeremy Heitkamp and Steve Weiers pitched for the Saints, with Weiers taking the loss.

Irish 9, Aces 8 Colton Borwege walked, stole second and scored on a base hit by Matt Pexa in the bottom of the 10th inning to give St Patrick a 9-8 win Sunday at Lonsdale.

St Patrick opened up a 6-1 lead, but the Aces battled back and took a 7-6 lead. They tied it at 8-8 in the top of the ninth to force extra innings.

Bill Dunker was the winning pitcher in relief, while Paul Tisdel took the loss. Pexa went 2-for-5 for St Patrick with two RBIs. Wade Schuknecht, Matt Ambroz, Josh Simon and Seth Ambroz also had two hits each.

For Lonsdale, Kevin Kalina, Aaron Kes, Tyler Bednar and Tschida each had two hits.

Express 20, Sox 1 Kyle Kraska was 4-for-4 with a triple to lead Elko in a 20-1 win over Webster Sunday.

Andrew Lyke was the winning pitcher, while Nick Nelson took the loss. Corey Grisim had three sacrifices.

Orioles 8, Mudcats 1 New Prague defeated Prior Lake 8-1 in Prior Lake. No other information was submitted on the game.
