By Patrick Fisher

New Prague’s Cub Scout Pack 323 held its annual Pinewood Derby March 19 at the New Prague Intermediate School.

This year’s derby had 88 entires, 60 Cub Scouts who raced cars and 28 cars in the Family Class, which is open to parents and siblings of the scouts.

Overall winners in the timed races for Cub Scouts were Jordan Foley, first place, Alexander Colling, second place, Cole Minnick, third place, Adam Karlan, fourth place, and John Klehr, fifth place. Winners in the Family Class were Jeremy Karlan, first place, Brian Smith, second place, Tom Tschimperle, third place, Will Colling, fourth place, and Alex Menden, fifth place.

Cubmaster Brian Smith said that this year Pack 323 used a new timer system that could time the races down to one-10,000th of a second. It also allowed the officials at the race to immediately post the first through third place winners of each race on a large screen.

Besides awards for the races, there were trophies for the Best Design given to one Cub Scout from each Den and the Family Class. Winners from each Den were Jeremy Fisher, Kevin Dudley, Alex Woyda, Ryan O’Rourke, Bryant Norsten, Matthew Schmitz, Ross Wald, Ben Russo, Tyler Johnson and Adam Menden. Melody Wald won in the Family Class.

Cub Scouts in New Prague are helping to continue a national tradition that goes back 52 years, as the first Pinewood Derbies were held in Manhattan Beach, CA, in 1953.
