New Prague native was honorary co-chair for Relay for Life in Iowa

Larry Unger, a native of New Prague, was an honorary co-chair for the 2006 Franklin County Relay for Life July 21-22, in Sheffield, IA.

Unger, who lives in Hampton, IA, was diagnosed with colorectal cancer following a routine colonoscopy in July 2005. He received treatments at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, where he underwent 28 radiation treatments along with 5-1/2 weeks of continuous 5FU chemotherapy infusions. His treatment also involved surgery to remove the cancer and chemo treatments.

Unger is now considered cancer-free. He hopes to eventually return to his job as executive chef at the Ridge Stone Golf Club in Sheffield this fall.

A 1972 graduate of New Prague High School, Unger is the son of Irene Unger and the late Albert Unger. He was raised on a farm near New Prague and has a brother, Richard, and two sisters, Bonnie Novak and Diane Johnson, who still live in or near the community.

Unger and his wife, Kathleen (Caron) have been married since 1975. They have four children and two grandchildren; Jessica Kappler and her husband Mark, and children Michael and Rylee, Cresco, IA; 1st Lt. Caron Unger in the U.S. Air Force, Fort Walton Beach, FL; Brian Unger, Yuma, AZ; and Loren Unger and his wife Jaren (Schmidt), Cedar Falls, IA.

Members of Unger's family took part in the Relay for Life at Sheffield. The event included food, entertainment, a cancer survivor's walk and a luminary service.
