New Prague Police take part in Operation NightCAP

By Patrick Fisher

Usually being in the top half of a list is a good thing, but when that list concerns impaired driving then it’s not.

The New Prague Police Department, along with police agencies in Scott and Carver counties and the Minnesota State Patrol, are participating in Operation NightCAP (Night-time Concentrated Alcohol Patrol). This is an impaired driving prevention program that involves law enforcement saturation efforts throughout the state and is concentrated in the 13 counties that have the highest number of alcohol-related fatal and serious crashes.

The majority of those counties are located around the Twin Cities. Scott County is ranked ninth on the list, with the neighboring counties of Dakota at fifth, Rice at eighth and Carver at 13th. Hennepin County tops the list at number one.

New Prague Chief of Police Mark Vosejpka said New Prague began participating in the program on October 1 of this year and will be involved until September 30, 2005.

All the agencies in Scott County will receive part of a total of $34,000 in funding for the program. The program is funded through the Office of Traffic Safety and the funds are distributed by the Department of Public Safety.

This program helps pay for additional personnel to enforce the impaired driving laws
