New Prague resident named to Augsburg's Hall of Fame
New Prague resident John Mayer, a 1989 alumnus of Augsburg College in Minneapolis, was named to the college's Athletic Hall of Fame during ceremonies on September 25 during Augsburg's Homecoming week.
Mayer excelled in both football and baseball at Augsburg. As a quarterback in football, he was a three-year starter, throwing for 4,237 career yards on 354-for-784 passing-totals all still in the top five in school history. He was a two-year captain and earned All-MIAC honors in 1987.
In baseball as a shortstop, he earned All-MIAC honors in both 1987 and 1988, as a member of teams that won the MIAC title in 1987 and advanced to the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional in both 1986 and 1987, earning all-tournament team honors in 1986.
Mayer was a business management major at Augsburg. For the past dozen years, he has worked as a senior sales representative for Graybar Electric. Mayer and his wife Marla have three children and live in New Prague.
