New Prague woman sentenced for role in assault of teenager

A New Prague woman pleaded guilty to felony involvement in the assault of a teenager that took place on July 7, 2016, at Southside Park in New Prague.

According to Le Sueur County Court documents, Jade Elizabeth Geelan, 20, pleaded guilty on April 18 to aiding and abetting a third-degree assault. Judge Mark Vandelist sentenced Geelan to five years supervised probation and up to 180 days in jail. Her first 45 days in jail were covered by 33 days already served.

Geelan must also pay $9,152.58 restitution to the victim's family, complete 15 days of Sentence to Serve, and attend monthly therapy sessions. If Geelan fails to comply with these conditions she could face additional jail time in 45-day increments. A review hearing will be held every October until 2019.

According to the criminal complaint, Geelan of New Prague, and Vincent Alonzo Hall, 18, of Montgomery, talked the 16-year-old victim to Hall's car that was located in Southside Park on July 7, 2016. Bryton Alexander Nelson, 22, of Montgomery, met them at the park and pulled the victim out of Hall's car and assaulted him, kicking him in the face.

New Prague Police responded to the scene around 10:45 a.m. and transported the victim to Mayo Clinic Health System Hospital in New Prague. According to the complaint, the victim suffered a large laceration to the back of his head and severe head trauma and required emergency brain surgery at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.

Geelan and Nelson initially told responding officers that they went to the park to smoke marijuana, located the victim on the ground, and called 911.

Nelson told police that he was picked up at his residence by Geelan around 10 p.m. and that Geelan informed him that the victim was at Southside Park in Hall's vehicle. According to the complaint, Nelson stated he "picked him up and slammed him down onto the concrete, when he heard a loud pop or crack."

According to the complaint, Geelan had spoken with Nelson earlier about a sexual assault involving a 14- year-old girl, and both Nelson and Geelan spoke about $800 that would be paid to the person who assaulted the one who committed the alleged assault.

Geelan reported to police that she heard the victim's head bounce twice, explained that the victim was "jerking and flailing on the ground,” and that she had previously arranged with Hall that Nelson would hold the victim while Hall "just roughed him up a bit," according to the complaint.

Nelson pled guilty to firstdegree assault and will be sentenced in June.

Hall pled guilty to aiding and abetting third-degree assault and will also be sentenced in June.
