NPHS takes part in Scott County seat belt challenge

The New Prague High School Student Council has joined other high schools in Scott County in the 2008 Seat Belt Challenge. In conjunction with Scott County Law Enforcement, New Prague High School is working to bring attention to the importance of wearing seat belts in vehicles.

From 7:20 a.m. to 7:40 a.m. Monday April 6, New Prague Student Council members monitored student drivers and their front-seat passengers as they entered the Student Parking Lot at New Prague High School. In all, more than 300 student drivers and front-seat passengers were observed, and 89 were not wearing shoulder belts. A final seat belt survey will occur before the end of April, and these statistics will be compared with the other participating high schools in Scott County.

Throughout the campaign, the student council is providing statistics, visual reminders, friendly rewards and an awareness video to promote seat belt awareness. The student council took on this project with the assistance of school liaison officer John Madigan who has provided resources and guidance during this project. According to council president Jamie Jandt, We hope to make drivers and passengers think about wearing seat belts not only coming to and from school
