Pickleball increasing in popularity

It is that time of year when kitchens in the New Prague area are busy preserving pickles and other produce from backyard gardens, but another type of "pickling" has been thriving in New Prague for the past year.

The sport of pickleball has caught fire and many local residents have discovered the enjoyment of this fast growing sport. During the winter months Community Education sponsored indoor sessions twice a week and an average of 80 participants attended each month. Summer has found the courts at Heritage Park being used six days each week with many new participants joining the game.

In less than a year the New Prague Area Pickleball Association (NPAPA) has grown both in quantity and quality of players. On August 5, several teams from New Prague competed in the Miracle Ear sanctioned tournament in Bloomington.

Twin sisters Karen Steinhoff and Sharon Smith won the 3.0 women's doubles division, and Dianna Michels and Becky Snell received a second place medal in the women's 2.5 division. The New Prague Area Pickleball Association has a website (New Prague Area Pickleball Association) and Facebook page which update events, playing times and locations, and other pickleball information.
