Police Chief applications narrow to 10

The opening for a police chief in Montgomery attracted 15 applications since the 4:30 p.m. deadline of Monday, August 21.

At the city council meeting on Monday, City Administrator, Brian Heck told the council the staff had reviewed the list of candidates on Monday and narrowed them to ten after seeing five of the applicants didn’t meet the minimum qualifications established by the council. The ten that remains are good candidates, Heck said.

“We have a good list of people. The ten we have, all but one, have bachelor degrees. Four have master’s degrees, and the majority of them have significant military experience and with law enforcement,” Heck said.

The council and Heck discussed a timeline for the interview process which would include an interview panel made up of a sheriff, former sheriff, and a local police chief. Councilor Mick McGuire suggested council representation on the panel, however Heck clarified that the names of the candidates are not being released, even to the council, until the finalists are named. After more discussion of council representation on the panel, McGuire suggested that mayor, John Grimm be a member. Grimm agreed, and Heck said he will provide the list of panel members to the council in the future.

In a timeline to be determined, the finalists will be announced and presented to the council, possibly in September. A community “meet and greet” will also be held for the public before the council publicly interviews the finalists in late September, depending on councilors’ schedules.
