Preliminary levy shows 9.6% decrease for TCU residents

Thanks to reductions in building and debt service, a retiring bond, growing enrollment, and frugal spending, taxpayers in the Tri-City United School District will see a 9.6 decrease in the school portion of their property taxes next year.

Superintendent Teri Preisler shared the good news at the regular board meeting of the TCU School Board on Monday in Lonsdale. The news was part of the board’s administrative report, of which parts were reviewed at the start of the meeting, and are available at the TCU website www.TCU2905.us.

On September 12, the board took action on next year’s levy by authorizing the maximum levy authority. Preisler said due to unknown actions at the state level, almost all of the school districts in Minnesota levy the maximum amounts during that time. She said between the maximum approval and the end of the month when they are required to submit a final percentage to the county, districts see a lot of levy changes and calculations from the state.

Preisler said the reduction that taxpayers will see is due to many factors.

“A big part is building and debt service. In February 2017 a bond in Le Center will sunset. This was shared with everyone during the referendum. Since we are a consolidated district, that also impacts Montgomery,” she said.
