Pushing limits
“The only way to discover the limits of the possible, is to go beyond them to the impossible.”
This quote, by writer and scientist Arthur C. Clarke, was chosen as the Class Motto for the New Prague High School Class of 2016.
Clarke is probably best known as the man behind 2001: A Space Odyssey. He was a proponent of space exploration and was among the first to advocate for a series of satellites that are the backbone of modern communications systems. His accomplishments have inspired many to push the limits of the possible.
There are 299 students who will be eligible to receive their diplomas at this weekend’s graduation ceremonies. If you look in this week’s Graduation section, you will see that many of them are planning to go on to college, some close to home, others far away.
Each graduate will leave New Prague High School with the same goals and dreams that their predecessors did. they have many of the same expectations that their parents had when they graduated from high school, and the same hopes that their grandparents had before them.
Whenever I cover a graduation ceremony, I think back to my own graduation from New Prague in 1978. I think of my classmates and what their goals and dreams were. May of them achieved those goals, many others found new interests and new goals and set out to achieve them. Some of us are doing things we never thought possible back when we were 18 years old and leaving for college.
Most of us have raised our families and seen our kids go through the same cycle… college, careers and marriage. Some of my classmates are grandparents and will hopefully live long enough to see the cycle continue.
And each generation will do what they can to push the limits of the possible. Each generation will continue to change the world and move on to what was previously thought to be impossible.
The New Prague Times, as a community newspaper, chronicles what is happening within the community. Children are the future of any community, and we have enjoyed following the future over the years, from the early childhood classes, elementary. middle and school accomplishments, whether they were on the athletic field, on stage or in the classroom. We offer our congratulations to this year’s graduates and offer our best wishes. The community is proud of you and we look forward to watching you as you endeavor to accomplish the impossible.
