Queen of Peace checks car seat safety

The Thanksgiving weekend means more traveling for families throughout the country. As a safety measure, parents are encouraged to have their children’s car seats checked prior to making these holiday trips.

Queen of Peace Hospital in New Prague has scheduled a drop-in car seat checkup event from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at New Prague Ford/Mercury, located east of New Prague on Highway 13/19.

Car seats are checked on a first-come, first-served basis; no appointments are necessary.

Safety technicians from Queen of Peace will conduct these free safety checks for area parents, grandparents, and others who transport young children on a regular basis.

During the clinics, staff from Queen of Peace complete a thorough checklist. Many factors are considered, including the age of the child passenger, the type of safety seats and vehicle restraints, proper installation and usage guidelines, recalls, and other important tips to best protect the young riders.

The safety technicians also demonstrate how to properly tighten car seats; tell parents when to turn an infant’s car seat from rear-facing to forward-facing, or if a seat has been recalled; and recommend other necessary adjustments or possible equipment replacement.

It takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes to examine each car seat.
