Rain slows road construction progress

Reconstruction work on Highway 13/19 continued over the past week despite the recent weather.

Although rain has slowed the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) project, crews from Chard Tiling & Excavating have still been able to work on various projects.

Susan Museus, construction project manager with MnDOT's District 7 Office in Mankato, Chard has been able to do bituminous paving, grading for the laying of sod and the pouring of concrete for sidewalks, curbs and gutters. Light poles along the route are also being placed.

The weather cooperated with workers for much of the construction season, but crews have been hampered by rain over the last few weeks. The project area includes New Prague's East Main Street and consists of reconstruction of the highway and improvements to intersections from Seventh Avenue SE to west of Alton Avenue.

Due to the work, Highway 13/19 has been closed to traffic from west of Alton Avenue to where the highway intersects with Scott County State Aid Highway 37 and 10th Avenue SE since this summer. The rain has delayed the opening of the highway, which was to be October 12.

Museus said they hope to reopen the highway to traffic by late October or early November, although the rain is one of the strongest controlling factors.

Weather permitting
