Raven Stream recognized for ‘Moving’ students

Raven Stream Elementary School in New Prague was among six Minnesota schools recognized for its Let’s Move! Active Schools program.

Let’s Move! is a national project to help young people ages 6-17 participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily. It is a sub-initiative of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign. Besides state recognition, Raven Stream was among 698 schools from 42 states recognized. The school was commended for creating an active school environment that provides students with opportunities to move throughout the school day.

Among the activities is JAMmin’ Minutes, two to three minute videos that consist of five exercises and a healthy tip. The videos are sent to the teachers to be used as short brain breaks for the students. The videos are also available on the webpages of Raven Stream’s physical education teachers Jesse Bastyr and Dana Smith, which students or families can use at home. Another activity is through Kid’s Company, a before and after school program. The group added a running club for their students and the club has nearly 40 students choosing to run or walk a mile before their school day even starts.
