Reed will resign from school board

Citing job duties that will keep him out of town for much of the next six months, New Prague Area School Board member Bob Reed has informed fellow board members that he is resigning effective immediately.
School Board chair Jerry Walerius made the announcement at the beginning of the board's monthly workshop meeting Monday, Nov. 8. He said he had heard from Reed that afternoon and he informed him of his decision.
Reed is the longest tenured member of the board, having served for 11 years. He served a portion of that time as board chairman. He is the second board member to resign this year. Dan Carlson, who served for more than six years, resigned in July, also in part due to a job duties. Sherry Brooks was appointed to his seat.
Board members briefly discussed what to do about the vacancy. The board must appoint a replacement to serve the final year of Reed's term. Options are to select a candidate who had applied for the previous opening or to open the position to applications and interview those who are interested.
No action was taken at the meeting. Since Reed has not yet submitted a letter of resignation, the board could not take action. They are expected to take action at the November 22 board meeting and declare a vacancy.
