Jim Hermel has been the manager of the Rice County Fair for nearly a decade.

And every year the fair, which is scheduled for July 18 thru July 23 in Faribault, increases in size and activities.

This year will be no different as the fair, according to Hermel, has continued to grow.

“It has grown a lot,” Morristown resident Hermel said. “The fair has grown by leaps and bounds every year.”

Hermel is especially excited about the grandstand events, the new beer garden and entertainment which will be performed in there and the great variety of free entertainment.

The grandstand events feature a supercross motorcycle race, enduro auto race, truck and tractor pull, two demolition derbies and the Rice County Queen contest.

The beer garden, which has been enlarged from 2,900 square feet to 6,100 square feet, will feature some great musical acts. They include The Johnny Holm Band, Smokescreen, Killer Hayseeds and The Blue Ringers.

The free entertainment is outstanding this year and will feature something for all ages.

There are two stages which will feature free entertainment for much of the week.

K-9s in Flight will have three shows daily. This attraction features dogs catching frisbees. They have performed at the halftimes of all the National Football League stadiums over the course of the past few years.

The Bassmeister will perform three times daily. His show features comedy on fishing and some tips for young anglers.

The Butterfly Fun House will be open all week. Individuals will be able to walk into a house filled with butterflys. There will be chances to feed them and take photographs with them.

The Tinkertoy Carnival will be featured all week long. An individual will start Tuesday building a replica of the Rice County Fair Carnival, strictly from Tinker Toys.

The Mitchell Marionettes from California are a third generation puppet and marionette show which will perform three times daily.

Friday is Kids Day and illusionist Jonathan Bryce will be performing on the Sellner Stage.

“There is so much free entertainment with two stages,” Hermel said. “There is something going on all the time.”
