Richard Scherz, 83

Richard "Dick" Scherz, age 83, of New Prague, formerly of Rice Lake, WI died Friday, August 23, 2013.

He was born July 13, 1930, to Arthur and Marion (Brunette) Scherz in Rice Lake. Dick graduated from the Rice Lake High School in 1948 and then entered the United States Army and was honorably discharged.

On June 10, 1951, Dick was married to Joan Grover in Rice Lake and she preceded him in death in 1990. He later married Shirley Carlson on March 16, 1991. Dick retired as a Route Analyst Supervisor for Northern States Power Company. His hobbies and interests in addition to his faith in Christ included, Viking Council with the Boy Scouts, coaching basketball, umpiring softball, fishing and attending Northwestern High School Football games. In addition, he particularly looked forward to annual vacations at Towering Pines Resort in Minnesota.

Dick Scherz is survived by his wife, Shirley Scherz of New Prague; two sons, Rick (Karen) Scherz of Texas and Dennis (Marsha) Scherz of Lake Nebagamon, WI; a daughter, Becky (Ted) Harasyn of Woodbury; a stepson, Brad (Kamy) Carlson of New Prague; two stepdaughters, Linda (Dean) Sivertsen of Manchester, MO, and Colleen (Mark) Gerber of Monticello; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and six step-grandchildren; three sisters, Marilyn Longseth of Cameron, WI, Tamra Wittstock of Rice Lake and Cynthia Schnacky of Windemere, FL; and many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan Scherz; and his parents, Arthur and Marion Scherz.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at Appleyard's Home for Funerals in Rice Lake. The Rev. Gordon Deuel of New Prague and longtime friend, mentor and author Dr. Jon Zens co-officiated the service. Interment was at Nora Cemetery in Rice Lake, where Military Rites were accorded by the Rice Lake Veterans Center Honor Guard. Visitation was from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at Appleyard's Home for Funerals.
