Robert H. Hammond, 83

Robert H. Hammond, 83, of New Prague, formerly of Granite Falls, died at St. Francis Medical Center in Shakopee on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005.

He was born on December 25, 1921, in Elkton, SD, to Arthur and Marcella (Millenkamp) Hammond. Robert was raised in Brookings, SD, and attended Brookings Public Schools and South Dakota State College in Brookings. He was a Sgt. during WWII in the Army Air Corps.

On May 29, 1942, Robert married Arlene M. Wiener in St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Brookings, SD. He owned and operated Granite Falls Feed Mill. Robert was a member of the American Legion in Granite Falls and the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. His hobbies included fishing, woodworking, hiking bike rides, riding in grandpa’s homemade train and he enjoyed special times with his grandchildren.

Robert is survived by his wife; daughter, Judi (Michael) O’Connor, Farmington; son, Mike (Karen) Hammond, Prior Lake; two brothers, James (Katherine), Pierre, SD, and William (Frances) Hammond, Vallejo, CA; five grandchildren, Erin, Sean and Patrick O’Connor and Dustin and Nathan Hammond.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Gladys (Carlisle) Hammond.

Funeral services were held on Monday at 1 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Granite Falls. Rev. Jim Dvorak officiated.

Interment was at Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings.

Visitation was at the church one hour prior to the service.
