Robert Havel, 88

 

Dr. Robert J. Havel, 88, of Brooklyn Park, formerly of Montgomery, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012.
Bob was born in Montgomery on January 23, 1924, a son of Dr. Martin V. and Antoinette (Thaler) Havel. He was a graduate of Montgomery High School, attended St. Thomas College and entered Creighton University Medical School in 1944. He completed medical school in the U.S. Air Force in 1947. Bob married Rosemary Fitzpatrick on September 6, 1947, and moved to St. Paul where he completed an internship at Anchor Hospital and a preceptorship at the St. Paul Clinic. He was on the staff of St. Joseph’s, Miller, St. Andrews, Fairview, St. Barnabas and North Memorial Hospital, where he was elected Chief of Staff in 1956. Bob was a Clinical Associate Professor of Family Practice at the University of Minnesota until he retired in 1988. He was proud of his Bohemian heritage and was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, hunting and golf. He was a competitive bridge player, an oil painter, and traveled extensively, even piloting a plane.
He is survived by his wife; children Mary Catherine (Mick), Dr. Robert Jr., Dr. Paul (Pam) and Tim (Karen); a sister Rita Leahy, White Bear Lake; grandchildren Dr. Kelly, Megan, Daniel, Brian and Kara; and great-grandchildren Jake, Bill, Arianna, Aidan, Kieran and Oliver.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings George, Virginia Malone and Delores Havel; and two sons Gary and Mark.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 19, at the Church of St. Margaret Mary in Golden Valley, followed by private interment.
Visitation was held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday prior to the services.
Arrangements were with the Gearty Delmore Funeral Home of Plymouth.
