Rollercoasters are for amusement parks

I love going to amusement parks. I love eating the deep-fried food, drinking the overpriced beverages and experiencing the thrills on the rides.

Who remembers the zipper, whose strong vertical G-forces, numerous spins, and noted sense of unpredictability will certainly make you lose your corn dog or pronto pup as the 12 cars are pulled around the ride as it turns? I rode it once. That was all it took.

Another ride I like is the rollercoaster. With its twists and turns, the first time you ride one, you never know what is coming up. That’s what makes it so exciting.

This week has been somewhat of a rollercoaster ride. On Saturday, the TCU Football team beat the Plainview-Elgin-Millville Bulldogs in the Section 1 AAA Football game. It was a close game, with a 13-12 score. When the Titans officially won the game, and their first trip to the state tournament, you could feel the excitement in the air. Everyone screamed, rushed on the field, and was pumped and excited at the team’s hard-earned victory.

On Sunday our rollercoaster dropped when parents/guardians, who are signed up for the TCU District’s JMC email and voice messaging system, were notified of a potential threat against TCU high school staff members.

The district handled the potential crisis superbly. They sent out periodic updates to parents/guardians letting them know what was happening, and why is was happening. They told us there was an email threat, and that to ensure the students’ and staff safety, they would utilize law enforcement at the school’s entrances at the start and end of the days that followed.

To further ease our worries, all bags were searched before they were allowed in the school. I am sure some students were irritated by having to wait to get into the school in the morning, but as a parent, I was very happy the school district was searching everything.

I appreciated the fact that the district was as transparent as it could be and let us know they were doing their job: educating our students and keeping them safe.

Our rollercoaster heads back up this Saturday as the Titans head to the state tournament to take on the Belle Plaine Tigers. It marks the first time the new Titans have been to the state football tournament. Previously, the Le Center Wildcats made it there in 1982 (Class B champions) and again in 1988, 1995 and 1999 (Class A runner-up). The Montgomery- Lonsdale Redbirds made it to state once, in 1981.

It is cause for celebration of the TCU team’s success. In this week’s Messenger, you will see two pages devoted to the team’s win over Plainview-Elgin-Millville, as well as the brackets for Saturday’s tournament, and a preview of the game. Thank the advertisers on the page who made it happen.

The coaster is moving up, and that’s where it should stay.
