Schneid Remarks

I've been in the newspaper business for more than half my life. I started in the sports department and have moved into a more overall newspaper position. But of course, sports is my favorite part of the paper. That being said, I have attended thousands of games over the past 30 years.

Sunday I witnessed something I never thought I would see.

I have watched individuals bowl 300 games. I have watched individuals set records in track and field. I have watched players set school records in basketball. I have seen teams win state championships. I have seen pitchers toss no-hitters.

Sunday I watched two Elysian-Morristown Legion pitchers team up to hurl a no-hitter against Montgomery in the District Tournament in Norwood. Dalton Grose and Thomas Hiller did not allow a hit in the elimination game Sunday morning.

Unfortunately, here is where I saw my first-ever no-hitter where a team lost. The Buccaneers were defeated by Montgomery 2-1 despite not recording a hit against Grose and Hiller. One run scored on an error and the second run scored on a fielder's choice.

It was an unfortunate situation for the local nine, one I had never witnessed before.

Hats off to the two pitchers and the rest of the team for making the plays in the field.

Earlier that morning I had an interview with a former WEM athlete who is looking to further her basketball career on a much higher level. Amanda Barton, the school record holder in points scored and rebounds, will be attempting to impress coaches and scouts next month at a Women's Basketball Combine in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Only 60 potential pros have been invited to this combine, which will give players an opportunity to show their skills.

Many of those attending will get a chance to sign professional contracts, something Barton has had a goal to do for many, many years.

If anyone would like to help Barton in her quest to head to Fort Lauderdale, there is a FundRazr account set up for those willing to donate towards her expense. I wish her luck in her quest for achieving the dream of a lifetime.

Had a chance to attend the Waseca County Fair with my significant other Thursday night and was impressed with the continued expansion and improvements made at the fair.

Their beer garden has morphed from a large tent, which I chaired for a couple of years back in the late 1980s to a full-blown bar and entertainment building. The food selection has also increased from a handful of stands to dozens of great tasting selections. And I understand many locals had top finishes in the demolition derby Friday night.

This week is the Rice County Fair and I also look forward to attending this fair.

We are blessed with so many outstanding county fairs in the 25 mile radius of the Lake Region Area. I am sure many of those demolition derby drivers will also be competing this weekend in Faribault at the Rice County Fair.

It is also nice to see all of the local youth who enter 4-H contests and open events. These kids work very hard to get ready for the competitions so it is nice to see their names with ribbons placed beside their displays.

We have youth in Waseca, Rice, and later next month, Le Sueur County Fair competitions.

Check out their displays and/or animals at the fairs.

Not that anyone is counting, but we are less than a month away from fall sports practices and less than six weeks away from school starting. Where has the summer gone? Between summer festivals, rain storms, and mosquito slapping, the summer has gone way too fast.

Check out some summer baseball this weekend when the Waterville Indians host the 13-60 League Playoffs. The Indians have a very good team this year and have a chance to advance to State if things fall into place.
