School district lowers tax levy by 9.65 percent for 2017

Merry Christmas from the TCU School District. Property owners in the district should see a decrease in the school portion of their property taxes next year after the TCU School Board approval to lower its 2017 levy by 9.65 percent over 2016.

Robin Pikal, the district’s business manager presented the levy and budget information at the district’s required Truth in Taxation meeting on Monday night, December 12. She broke down the levy and the reason for the decrease to the board and members of the public. She explained how state sources make up almost 85 percent of the district’s budget and how decisions at the state level affect the local authority.

“The main reason for the decrease was changes to the state formula (that district’s don’t have a say in),” Pikal said. “The district really strives to maintain fiscal responsibility to our taxpayers.”

She also pointed out that market values could also affect property taxes and that the district as a whole chose to decrease the levy, but they can’t control the city or county portions that also make up a resident’s property tax bill.
