School referendum meeting set for Lonsdale Nov. 11

New Prague Area Schools has announced a series of four community meetings that will be held in anticipation of the December 14 bond referendum.

The first meeting is scheduled for today (Thursday, Nov. 11) at the Lonsdale City Hall. There will be a meeting at the St. Patrick Social Hall on Thursday, Nov. 18. On Monday, Nov. 22, there will be a meeting at the New Prague Intermediate School cafeteria. The final meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 2, at the New Market Area Hall.

For all meetings, the doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with a presentation beginning at 7 p.m.

The school district is asking voters to approve three questions on the December 14 ballot. The first, if approved, would provide for construction of new elementary schools in New Prague and New Market and upgrade and equip the current Intermediate School for centralized use; the second would result in construction of a new elementary school to serve the Lonsdale region and construction of an addition to the High School, and the third would be to construct an indoor swimming pool at the high school.

The second question is contingent on passage of question 1, and the third question is contingent on questions 1 and 2 passing.

Total cost of the three questions is about $63 million. For a $200,000 home in the district, the cost would be about $30.38 per month in property taxes if all three options are approved.

The school district is also putting the finishing touches on an informational brochure that will be mailed throughout the district. The brochure details the three questions and their cost, identifies the needs of the district and talks about the growing enrollment in the school district and how the proposed projects would address the growth.
