Siebsen resigns, council to appoint replacement
Tim Siebsen has resigned from his position on the Montgomery City Council, and the council took action Monday night to start the appointment process.
The council resolution accepted the resignation and declared a vacancy, with the process to fill the vacant seat explained by City Administrator Brian Heck.
“Staff received notification from council member Tim Siebsen on Monday, July 6, announcing his resignation effective immediately,” said Heck in his memo to the council. “The process to fill the vacant seat is through appointment, and since more than two years remain in the term, the appointment will be through December 2016. There will then be a special election during the regular election (November 1, 2016) to fill the remaining two years on the term.”
Heck said no reason was given for the resignation, except that it was effective immediately
Siebsen was elected to a four-year term on the council in November 2014.
Heck went on to say, “Not passing the resolution would have kept the council at four active members (mayor and three councilmen) until December 2018 when a qualified successor is elected to fill the seat. In order to have the statutorily required number of council members, the council needs to fill the seat vacated by Mr. Siebsen.”
The city staff recommended the council adopt the resolution and solicit applications from residents interested in serving on the council for the next 18 months.
To qualify for the council, persons must live within the city limits, be a U.S. citizen, and be 21 years of age or older. To apply to be considered, those interested should submit a letter of introduction and a statement of qualifications or resume to city hall. Applications must be received by Thursday, Aug. 13. People may contact city hall at 507-364-8888 with any questions.
