Simon's Bar damaged by fire, remains open

Simon's Bar was open Friday morning, just 12 hours after the New Prague Fire Department was called to extinguish a fire on the roof of the building.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Phil Simon, owner of the Main Street establishment, said indications are the fire was caused by a short in a sign in front of the building. He said it appeared the short caused the electric current to travel along a cable holding the sign in place, and that the fire started where the cable and the flashing made contact.

There was some damage to the roof and water damage to an upstairs apartment, but the business sustained no damage and was open on Friday morning.

The department was called at about 9:15 p.m. and was on the scene until midnight. About 10:30 p.m. they received another call in Lanesburgh Township. It turned out to be a sofa that someone had dumped in the roadway southwest of New Prague and set on fire.
