Sister Honora Stacy, 93

Sister Honora Stacy, 93, died on Monday, Oct. 25, 2010, at the Sacred Heart Convent Retirement Center in Milwaukee, WI.

Sister was born on July 6, 1917, in Crystal Falls, MI. She was one of 13 children, five boys and eight girls. Her five brothers are deceased, and her sister, Sister Bernadette, died at 15 and was received into the School Sisters of St. Francis community on her death bed. Sister Honora was received into the School Sisters of St. Francis in June, 1934. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Alverno College in Milwaukee and began her long career in teaching. She was an elementary teacher and principal in Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota for 30 years. She taught second grade at St. Wenceslaus in New Prague from 1938-1956, and also studied for her Masters Degree in Art Education. In 1965, she began to teach art at St. Joseph High School in Kenosha, WI, where she continued for 25 years. Sister Honora retired from high school teaching at age 73 and went to live at St. Joseph Convent Motherhouse in Milwaukee. She taught art classes to senior adults in the La Farge Life Long Learning Institute for 10 years. She also spent time working on her own paintings, and later had her own art show with more than 125 pieces of art. In 2005, Sister moved to the Sacred Heart Retirement Center, and at her 75th Jubilee Celebration, she shared the following reflection: I had a wonderful life.
