Six candidates vie for three seats on school board

Voters in the New Prague Area School District will have six candidates to choose from for the Board of Education when they go to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

There are three seats open on this year’s ballot, as the terms of Tim Heinen, Rod Tietz and Diane Weyrick expire at the end of the year. Weyrick is the only incumbent seeking reelection, and is joined on the ballot by Marty Beckius, Don Dvorak, Pam Tietz, Amy Trygestad and Jerry Walerius.

Candidates will have two chances to speak directly with voters. On Thursday, Oct. 27, there will be a candidate forum/panel discussion at the New Prague Middle School, in the board meeting room. That forum begins at 7 p.m. There will also be a candidate forum at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, at the New Market Area Hall.

The New Prague Times sent a questionnaire to each of the candidates requesting a brief biography and response to three questions:

1. What qualities would you bring to the school board?

2. What is your position on the current bond referenda to build an addition to the high school, to build a swimming pool, to purchase land for a future elementary school and to fund energy-saving improvements to existing district buildings?

3. What are your top three priorities for the school district?

The candidates were asked to keep their total response to 500 words or less. Some of the responses were edited to keep within those constraints.
