Spikers top Crusaders

The New Prague Trojan volleyball team opened its season with a pair of tough opponents. The Trojans lost to Hopkins (No. 5, Class AAA) in three  games, 25-22, 25-21, 25-22, then defeated Mayer Lutheran, a strong Class A team, 25-22, 26-24, 25-22.

            New Prague returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 3, at Rosemount, then will host Holy Angels on Thursday, Sept. 5.

            “We played a very competitive match with Hopkins,” coach Angie Andersen said.  “We made a few unforced errors in game three at key times to give up the set, but it is a good base to start the season.”

  Hanna Friedrich came off the bench, playing in her first varsity match and played great, having four kills off of six attempts with no errors, Andersen said. “She did a great job stepping up when we needed her to.”

            Sydney Foss led the Trojans with eight kills, 11 digs and two blocks, while Marissa Ekness had seven kills, five digs, four aces, two assist sand two blocks.

            Emma Hughes had 20 assists, while Hannah Erickson had eight digs and Alex Jendersee had two aces and two kills.

            “The team did a great job of coming from behind to win the first two sets, then easily finished off Mayer Lutheran in set 3,” Andersen said. “We served very consistently but aggressive.   Marissa Ekness had a great night offensively, mixing her shots and transitioning hard to get into position, and Melanie Clausen did a great job defensively.” 

            She added that Alex Jendersee was a real force at the net getting a total of 5 blocks.

Foss led the Trojans with 10 kills and nine digs, along with three block assists.  Ekness had 11 kills on 30 attempts with only three errors.

            Highlights of the evening was Emma Hughes breaking the school’s all-time record for set assists. The record was previously held by Megan Erickson Giesen with 1,351. Hughes had 28 assists on Monday to bring her career total to 1,371.
