St. Patrick beats Union Hill for Region 6C title

The St. Patrick baseball team of the D-R-S Blue Division completed a four-game sweep to win the Region 6C title with a 5-2 win over Union Hill, Sunday, at St. Patrick.

The Irish will represent the region as the No. 1 team in the state tourney and Union Hill also qualifies as the runner-up.

Union Hill lost its first game in the tourney to Arlington but rallied to win the next three in the losers' bracket to gain the state meet.

Clinton, the champion team Region 9C, will be the opponent in Union Hill's first game in the state tourney. Game time is 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 19, at Red Wing.

St. Patrick will meet Raymond, the Region 9C runner-up, in a game to follow at 1:30 p.m., also at Red Wing.

The two winners play again Sunday, Aug. 20, at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Both of those games are scheduled for Red Wing.

Winners of games in the opening two rounds enter double elimination play, which starts Sunday, Aug. 27.

Union Hill 5, Brownton 2

The Bulldogs downed the Brownton Bruins in a matchup at Union Hill, eliminating them from the playoffs with a 5-2 victory.

Brownton took a brief lead in the top of the first inning as Ryan Hansch hit a solo home run.

But Union Hill came back with a four-run uprising in the second inning. Jeff Bruder doubled, Adam Giesen was hit by a pitch and Brian Giesen's sacrifice bunt advanced both runners. Phil Giesen's grounder to short went for a two-run error. A passed ball followed and Jesse Bastyr hit an RBI single. After a walk, another error allowed the fourth run.

The Bruins scored in the sixth without the aid of a hit on a hit batter, walk and errors.

In the seventh inning, Union Hill scored the final run as Rick Bell hit a single, advanced on steals and was driven in by Bruder's single.

Jeremy Wieland, draftee pitcher from New Market, did a superb job as he went the distance for the Bulldogs. allowed only two hits, struck out 16, walked four and hit one batter.

Union Hill 7, Arlington 1

Union Hill led from the second inning on and outhit the A's at Arlington for a 7-1 victory.

John Masberg led the Bulldogs at the plate with two hits and three RBI's. Also getting two hits each were Dan Smith, Brian Giesen and Phil Giesen. Jeff Bruder and Jesse Bastyr drove in one run apiece.

Arlington was led by Scott Dose and James Van Duskirk with two singles each.

Rick Bell was the winning pitcher, allowing just one run and striking out five batters.

Sun., Aug. 14

St. Patrick 5, Union Hill 2

Union Hill outhit St. Patrick at Bonin Field, but the Irish hits were all in the three innings they scored and it resulted in a 5-2 win for St. Patrick for the Region 6C title.

The game was played in intermittent drizzle and rain.

John Johnson led the winners at bat with a sacrifice fly in the third inning, which followed a bases loaded walk by Jeff Bjerke; and a two-run single in the seventh inning.

St. Patrick's other run in the sixth inning came on a single by Bjerke, sacrifice bunt by Johnson, and Wade Schuknecht's RBI single, which scored pinch runner Mike Sticha.

The Bulldogs scored two in the top of the sixth on a run-scoring single by Adam Giesen and a sacrifice fly by John Masberg.

Masberg also totaled three hits, two doubles and a single.

Jesse Bastyr and Matt Sticha of Union Hill each hit a double and a single, and Adam Almich of the Irish hit two singles.

Bill Dunker worked the first six innings and was the winning pitcher, with Josh Simon pitching the last three innings to get the save.

Additional draftees for state tournament play include two Gaylord players. Brad Walsh, pitcher, was drafted by St. Patrick; and Tim Nesvig, also a pitcher, was drafted by Union Hill.
