Starting a new tradition?

Last week’s “Lounge With Law Enforcement” drew more than 800 people to New Prague’s Memorial Park. The event was created to help build a bond between area law enforcement officers and local residents.

It’s been a tough summer to be a police officer. Incidents across the nation - in Louisiana, Texas, Wisconsin, and even in Minnesota have caused a disconnect between police and some segments of the population.

The fact of the matter is, most Americans support their local police. They recognize the important role the officers play in our society. Take a look at the police report on Page 6 of this week’s newspaper. In a seven-day span, New Prague Police had more than 80 incidents that were reported in this week’s paper. The calls ranged from lockouts to medical emergencies, as well as reports of suspicious incidents, traffic stops, crime reports and more.

The community relies on the police to help it function and expects them to be there when things have gone wrong. Too often, the only contact members of the public have with police is when something has gone wrong, either because of a traffic stop, a crash, or as the result of a crime. No one is really feeling good about things when that interaction takes place, and it’s hard to appreciate the work that these officers do.

That’s one of the great things about last week’s event. Law enforcement officers from both Scott and Le Sueur counties were on hand to hear the public say “Thank You” in a big way.

Organizers Patricia Schug and Kacey Wilcox said that officers appreciated last week’s event, and there is talk about making this an annual event. Here’s hoping that this is the start of a new tradition in the New Prague area, an event set aside each year to show the officers that they are appreciated for the important role they play in our community.
