Student speakers say NPHS prepared them for college

Two members of the New Prague High School Class of 2016 have been chosen to deliver speeches during the commencement ceremony Friday, May 27.

Abby Teply, daughter of Nancy Teply of New Prague and Bryce Teply of Lonsdale, and Lilly Schulte, daughter of Mike and Kristi Schulte of the Cedar Lake area, will talk about the class, its present and its future during the ceremony planned for Trojan Stadium.

Teply is student council president, a member of the National Honor Society, the Gay-Straight Alliance, PROUD and the Spanish Club. She plans to study psychology at Winona State University.

She said there was so much that New Prague High School offered that helped her in her academic pursuits. "The administrative staff and counselors work hard for the students. They helped arrange my schedule so I could take a number of college credit classes," she said.

"The teachers are all incredible," she adds. "Mr. Dorner will come in at 6 a.m. to help students review for a calculus test." Other teachers she counts among her favorites are Jen Sayler, Allison Olson and Greg Tikalsky.

"New Prague High School has helped me to be prepared for college," she said.

She said she’s going to miss her friends and going to school events.

When asked if she had any advice for someone coming into high school, she said "Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you have a question, it doesn’t mean you’re dumb. Ask the question so you can get a better understanding.

Among her favorite teachers are Michelle Schellin, Jeff Decker, Katie Kalina and Terry Odenthal

"They all pushed me in the classroom, helping me to become a better student."

She said a good teacher has organization, passion and a connection with students.

"New Prague High School helped me because I took a number of AP and CIS classes for college credit. The teachers have shown me how to time manage and that will really help me as I go off to college," she said.

As far as advice to younger students.

"Pay attention in class and put in the effort. You’ll find that what you put in, you’ll get back in good results."
