Students learn about water during tour

The sixth grade students of Christa Smith from New Prague Middle School were able to find out the workings of a water filter plant recently. New Prague Water Utility Supervisor Craig Novotny, with fellow city staff members Jim Westall and Frank Bisek, gave the 17 students a tour of the plant along Lexington Avenue S. on Tuesday, March 22.

The three explained how the water is brought from wells and as part of the treatment iron and manganese are taken out before the water is sent along.

The students in the elective class made their own filter systems as part of their studies. Appropriately their tour on March 22 was World Water Day, an international observance and an opportunity to learn more about water related issues. The tour also helped make the students aware of the process of making sure water is safe to drink before it comes out of faucets at their school or homes. The class is offered four times during the school year. Each class receives a tour of the plant with the next to be held in May.
