Swim team dives into competition this week

The New Prague Trojan girls swim and dive team will test the waters on their young season this week, traveling to Mankato East for a meet on Thursday, Aug. 25, then jump right back into the water the next day with a meet at Austin.

First-year head coach Tracy Torgerson’s team will open its home schedule - the final year they will be at the Tri-City United Montgomery pool - at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, against Hutchinson. A new indoor pool is being constructed at the Central Education Campus and should be ready for the 2017 season.

Torgerson said the team had a great turnout, with 45 athletes reporting for practice. The added depth will give the Trojans a chance to improve on last season’s 2- 10 record.

Captains for the Trojans are Abby Kallal and Bella Schulte, and the team also returns section finalists. Sarah Helvick, Ellen Popple, and Emily Schaap.

"We have a group of strong senior leaders and many swimmers who have trained over the summer ready to step into a scoring role," Torgerson said.
