Tennis falls just short of wins

The TCU tennis players were on the road this week where they dropped two close matches. On Monday, Sept. 23, they played in Wells against United South Central and on Tuesday, Sept. 24, they took on the Giants of Le Sueur Henderson.

USC 4 - TCU 3

Coach Phil Murry praised his team for the quality of play against the Rebels of United South Central, however it just wasn’t enough to pull off the win.

When commenting on his team’s play, he had this to say: “I thought Kori and Courtney played about as well as I have ever seen them play. They made good decisions throughout their matches. Our two doubles team also played very well, coming back in the last set from being down 5-4 to winning 7-5.”

Murry said USC will be the top seed in the section with their 15-2 record.

“No one in our section has come closer than 5-2 when playing them,” he commented. “I was very proud of the way our girls battled all day. They could have come in after a long bus ride, facing the best team in the section and rolled over, but they didn’t.”

The results:

#1 Singles: Claire Christian (USC) defeated Breanna Jaycox (TCU) 6-0, 6-1.

#2 Singles Kori Lowe (TCU) defeated Linsey Thisius (USC) 7-5, 6-4

#3 Singles Courtney Hentges (TCU) defeated Kia Legred (USC) 6-3, 2-6, 6-2

#4 Singles Julia Stenzel (USC) defeated Rosa Ruiz (TCU) 6-1, 6-0

#1 Doubles Joyce Rubio and Angela Bixby (USC) defeated Chase Arndt and Jessica O’Meara (TCU) 6-0, 6-0

#2 Doubles Emily Holicky and Guadalupe Ruiz (TCU) defeated Carly Weber and Wendy Martinez (USC) 6-4, 7-5

#3 Doubles Emma Brand and Kelly Neubauer (USC) defeated Lexi Briseno and Kelsey Davis (TCU) 6-2, 6-0

LSH 4 - TCU 3

Once again the Titans could taste victory but came up short against Le Sueur Henderson.

“This is a team we match up very well with,” Murry said, “but once again, the inability to pick up that fourth win killed us.

Murry noted that his singles winners dominated their matches from the beginning, but the doubles teams couldn’t keep up with the Giants.

“They switched some things up that really strengthened their doubles this time around,” he said.

The Results:
