Tennis team sits with 3-3 record

New Prague High School's tennis team won two matches last week and now has a 3-3 record. The Trojans have surpassed their win total for all of last season.

New Prague defeated Farmington and Faribault and lost to Spring Lake Park and Prior Lake.

A match at Northfield on April 18 was rained out and was scheduled to be made up Wednesday, April 23. The Trojans travel to Shakopee Thursday, April 24. They go to Mankato East Monday, April 28, and host Hutchinson Tuesday, April 29.

Trojans 4, Tigers 3

New Prague matched its win total from last season and went to 2-1 on the season Tuesday, April 15, with a 4-3 win over Farmington.

The teams were tied at 2-2, and coach Matt Duoos said they needed to win two of the remaining three matches to take the win.

Marty DeValk at No. 1 singles and Brett Hoffman at No. 4 singles came up with huge three-set victories to earn the win for the team.

DeValk won his match 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 and Hoffman came back from a first-set loss to win in a tiebreaker 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

The Trojans also had two wins in doubles. Josh Meuwissen and Ben Dresow easily won their match at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-0, while Jamie Kollasch and Jared Burton defeated their opponents 6-0, 6-4.

Travis Oestreich and Zach Farmer lost in singles for New Prague, as did the doubles team of Mitch Fratzke and Andrew Puente.

New Prague Invitational

New Prague went 1-1 in an abbreviated New Prague Invitational Saturday. The Trojans defeated Faribault and lost to Spring Lake Park.

Trojans 4, Falcons 3

The Trojans swept the doubles competition and picked up a win at No. 4 singles to knock off Faribault for the second time this season.

Meuwissen and Dresow won their match by a 6-1, 6-0 score. At No. 2 doubles, Fratzke and Puente won 6-1, 6-4, while Kollasch and Burton needed a second-set tiebreaker to win 6-1, 7-6 (7-1).

Farmer picked up a win at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-3. Losing at singles were DeValk, Hoffman and Oestreich.

Panthers 7, Trojans 0

Spring Lake Park was too much for the Trojans, as they won by a 7-0 score.

All matches were won in two sets with the exception of Farmer's. Farmer and his opponent split the first two sets, with Farmer winning 7-5, then losing 4-6. A tie-breaker was used instead of a full third set, with Farmer coming up on the short end, 7-10.

Also losing in singles were DeValk, Hoffman and Oestreich, while the teams of Meuwissen and Dresow, Fratzke and Puente and Kollasch and Burton all lost in doubles.

Shakopee won the championship, beating both Spring Lake Park and Faribault. New Prague and Spring Lake Park went 1-1, while Faribault was 0-2.

Lakers 7, Trojans 0

The Trojans lost a 7-0 contest to Prior Lake at home Monday. Details will be in next week's edition of The Times.
