Tennis team wins 2 of 3

The New Prague Trojan boys tennis team won two of three matches in the past week.

After losing a Wright County Conference match to Hutchinson, 5-2, the Trojans rebounded with wins over Waseca and Mankato East. The team is 3-2 on the season (0-1 WCC).

New Prague was scheduled to host Mound Westonka Tuesday, April 25, then travel to Prior Lake Wednesday, April 26. New Prague is at Delano Friday, April 28, and hosts Holy Family Catholic Tuesday, May 2. The Trojans host Orono Thursday, May 4.

New Prague dropped its WCC opener to an alwaysstrong Hutchinson team, 5-2 Tuesday, April 18.

The Trojans first win came at No. 1 doubles, where Eric Morris and Jacob Washa won a two-set match against an experienced Hutchinson pair.

“Eric and Jacob played smart, aggressive tennis and seemed to control the play for most of the match,” said Coach Morris. “It was a good win for them as I expect Hutchinson's duo to be one of the top doubles teams in our conference.”

Tony Larson also won in a marathon match at No. 2 singles, beating his opponent in a super-tiebreaker in lieu of a third set.

Alex Masberg lost his match at No. 1 singles, but played well against one of the best singles players in the section. Logan Hallet and Carter Lowe also lost close matches at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Kyle Schoenbauer and Bryce Berglund played two good sets at No. 2 doubles, with effective serving and good ground strokes, but seemed to lose some accuracy and aggressiveness as the match progressed.

Josh Kassendorf and Evan Zimmer played well at No. 3 doubles, but could not find a way to string together enough points to win the match.
