Titans knock off Cardinals in Section 2AA

The Section 2 AA baseball tournament had another upset Thursday when the Tri-City United Titans knocked off the Fairmont Cardinals 12-2 in five innings in Fairmont. The Titans are in the winner's bracket and play top seed and top-rated Belle Plaine at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Veterans Field in St. Peter. The winner of that game waits to see who comes from the elimination bracket and doesn’t have to play again until Thursday. Belle Plaine downed Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 4-0.

With 11 runs in the first three innings, the Titans Varsity left no doubt about the eventual outcome. An RBI single by Brad Davis, a hit by pitch, an RBI single by Marty Kalina, a hit by pitch, a walk by Trey Krartkremer, and a three-run double by Trevor Smisek during the second inning helped the Titans put some runs on the board early.

Jack Skluzacek racked up two RBIs on three hits for the TCU. He doubled in the second inning and singled in the third and fifth innings.

Smisek shut down Fairmont while he was on the mound. Fairmont managed just three hits off of the Titans Varsity's pitcher, who allowed one earned run, walked two and struck out four during his five innings of work.

Fairmont’s Clayton Maakestad took the loss for Fairmont. He allowed 11 runs in three innings, walked three and struck out two.

The Titans added three more runs in the top of the third. Sam Ehlers started the inning with a single, bringing home Davis.
