Trap team advances to state tournament

The Tri-City United trap shooting team is headed to state after the Titans qualified Friday, June 16 at the 2017 Trap Shooting Championship qualifying competition in Alexandria.

In addition to moving on to the Minnesota State High School League tournament, the Titans medaled in all three levels. Coach Joel Fogarty was pleased with the kids performance on and off the field.

“It was very impressive seeing all of you compete and having a good time this last Friday! All of your hard work and dedication really surfaced and paid off! We dominated the 5A class, 26-team tournament by performance,”  he said.
TCU tied for first place with Alden-Conger with 480 points, but ultimately settled for second with a tiebreaker. The second-place finish was the ticket to the state tournament.

However, the Titans took first place in the junior varsity team with 457 points. The Novice Team took third place with 369 points. Fogarty said the Titans had their eyes on the target.

“No other team for that day podium placed in all three levels of competition,” he commented. “Tri-City United was mentioned a lot during the awards ceremony and we brought some hardware home. It was awesome. We had 12 athletes out of 40 that hit 90 out of 100 clays or better! Thirty percent of our team shot at 90 percent accurate or better. That is a very impressive average! Many of you also earned a varsity letter this last Friday!”

The state tournament is Saturday, June 24, at the Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake.
