Trecker signs with NDSU

New Prague High School basketball player Whitney Trecker became the second Trojan senior to sign a Division I athletic scholarship recently, accepting a tender from North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND.

Trecker, a 5-foot, 9-inch guard, signed the letter of intent during a signing ceremony in the principal's office at New Prague High School.

Trecker chose NDSU from among several other schools that showed interest. She said the fact that NDSU is relatively close to home played a role in the decision.

The Bison, completing a transition from Division II to Division I, will begin play in the Mid-Continent Conference next season. The conference includes schools in Indiana, Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, Oklahoma, Utah and South Dakota.

Trecker averaged 20.6 points per game this year and topped the 1,000-point mark in career scoring. She led the Trojans to two state tournament berths.

Attending the signing ceremony on April 11 were Trecker's parents, Jim and Anette Trecker, brother Tyler, head girls basketball coach Ron Gunderson and high school principal Tom Doig.

This has been a good year for New Prague High School athletes in terms of athletic scholarships. Earlier this year, New Prague's Jenna Kilpatrick signed a letter of intent to play hockey at Ohio State. Another NPHS senior, Tony Kubes has signed a Division II letter of intent to play football at St. Cloud State. In addition, former Trojan boys hockey player Matt Ambroz, a 2005 graduate, signed a letter of intent to play hockey at the University of Nebraska-Omaha on April 11.
