Trojan boys edged by Cougars, beat Whitehawks

New Prague’s boys basketball team split a pair of games last week, losing a tight contest with Lakeville South on Tuesday by one point, then defeating Mound-Westonka Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans were scheduled to play St. Peter on Tuesday, Dec. 13. They host Waseca on Friday, Dec. 16, then travel to Henderson to play Le Sueur-Henderson on Thursday, Dec. 22.

Cougars 75, Trojans 74

In a tight game that came down to the wire, Lakeville South handed the Trojans a 75-74 defeat Tuesday, Dec. 6, in the Trojan gym.

The two teams played to a standoff in the first half, with the game tied at 35-35. Neither team could take command of this one, as the lead changed hands several times. The biggest margin was four points during the first 18 minutes of play. Adam Gill, the Trojans’ senior guard, gave New Prague a strong offensive threat, scoring 10 of his 13 points in the first half.

Senior Tom Giesen paced the Trojans in the second half, scoring 17 of his team-high 24 points. The 6-foot, 6-inch forward displayed an outside touch, hitting three shots from outside the three-point arc.

Sophomore Tony Johnson was also in double figures for the Trojans, scoring 17.

For all their offensive efforts, the Trojans were matched every step of the way by South. Brady Soule led all scorers, netting 35 points for the Cougars. Twenty-six of those came in the second half.

I really liked the effort against Lakeville South
