Trojan girls take three more, hold on to 2nd in Missota Conference

The New Prague Trojan girls basketball team will finish its regular season with two games this weekend, as they host Northfield Thursday, Feb. 17, and Shakopee Friday, Feb. 18. New Prague was 8-3, good for second place in the Missota Conference, and 15-7 overall going into its game Tuesday against Prior Lake.

The Trojans will have a week off before entering Section 5AAA play on Saturday, Feb. 26, against an opponent to be determined. First round games will be played at the sites of the top two seeds. Most likely, that will be either at Benilde-St. Margaret's or Minneapolis North, both of which are ranked in the top 10 in the state. Seeds will be announced this week, and will be published in The New Prague Times in its February 24 edition.

Semifinals will be March 1 at Minneapolis Edison and the championship game will be March 4 at Maple Grove High School.

Teams in Section 5AAA are Benilde-St. Margaret's, Minneapolis North, Mound-Westonka, New Prague, Orono, St. Louis Park, Shakopee and Waconia.

Last week the Trojans won three games, defeating Farmington, Le Sueur-Henderson and Northfield.

Trojans 76, Tigers 38

The Trojans were relentless on defense in the first half, taking at 20-2 lead after one period and leading 45-10 at the half.

Ten different players found the scoring column for the Trojans, led by sophomore forward Whitney Trecker. Making her first start, she scored eight points in the first quarter to pace the Trojan attack, and had 17 by the end of the third period. She and the four other starters did not play in the fourth.

Also in double figures for New Prague were Mandy Haecherl with 12, Katie Theisen with 12 and Katelyn Meger with 10.

Once again, the Trojans jumped to a big lead and rested its starters in the final period. New Prague led 13-6 after one period and 37-14 after two. New Prague's reserves maintained its defensive efforts in the second half, leading 52-17 after three.

Scoring was more balanced for the Trojans in this game. Twelve different players scored, with no one getting more than 12. Haecherl and Camille Kratochvil each had 12. No one else was in double figures.

Trojans 51, Raiders 39

New Prague Broke open a close game with an 18-10 third quarter on their way to a 51-39 win at Northfield Friday.

The score was tied at 9-9 after one period, with the Trojan holding a 19-16 lead after two. In the third, New Prague hit a pair of three-pointers and stretched the lead to 11 points at 37-26.

Trecker led the Trojans with 13 points, including eight in the final period. New Prague did a good job from the free throw line, making 17 of 22.
