Trojan grapplers open season 3-2

The New Prague Trojan wrestling season kicked off last weekend with a dual meet against perennial state power Scott West and the New Prague Invitational, with four dual meets, including two against state-ranked teams.

The Trojans concluded the weekend with a 3-2 record. They lost to Scott West on Thursday, Dec. 1, then went 3-1 on Saturday, Dec. 3, defeating Sibley East, St. Peter and Waseca and losing to Albert Lea.

New Prague has a pair of triangular meets next on its schedule. On Thursday, Dec. 8, they host Watertown- Mayer and Tri-City United, both Section 2AA foes. On Friday, Dec. 9, they travel to Northfield to take on the host Raiders and another section foe, Glencoe-Silver Lake. The Trojans have a dual meet at Delano on Thursday, Dec. 15.

Panthers 47, Trojans 19 The Trojans opened against Scott West, ranked No. 3 in Class AA, in Belle Plaine and lost to the host Panthers 47-19.

Colby Dunkel got the Trojans started out right, earning a win in his first-ever varsity match. He registered a 9-4 decision.

The Panthers won the next seven matches to take a commanding 32- 3 lead before Gaige Giles scored a fall at 160 pounds. Nick Arguedas followed with a major decision at 170 to make it 32-13.

Scott West scored a fall at 182, but the Trojans’ Brennan Rutt returned the favor at 195 with a fall, making it 38-19.

Scott West won the last two matches to make the final 47-19.

“It was nice to see Nick Arguedas and Sam Reyant (132 pounds) back on the mat after missing most of last year due to injury,” Coach Dan Wagner said. Nick won his match and Sam took last year’s state runner- up into overtime.

“We learned that we have a lot to work on and will be focusing on the areas where we struggled this upcoming week.”
