Trojan grapplers win big over Hutchinson

On paper it looked like a tight matchup with the Hutchinson Tigers visiting the New Prague Trojans for a Wright County Conference dual on Thursday, Feb. 1.

The Tigers are ranked No. 6 in Class AAand the Trojans No. 12 in Class AAA. New Prague had won a narrow victory in a non-conference dual three weeks earlier that was decided by the final match.

But this one was over well before the final match. Three open weights for Hutchinson provided much of the difference as New Prague posted a 48-25 win on Senior Night.

The Tigers featured five ranked wrestlers, but two of them did not wrestle on this night, meaning each team had three ranked wrestlers in their lineup.

New Prague took an 18-0 led with No. 3-ranked Nick Novak winning by forfeit at 106 pounds, Colby Dunkel getting a fall at 113 and Simon Kajer winning by forfeit at 120.

The Tigers won the next two matches, with No. 4- ranked Brock Luthens winning by fall at 126 over Joe DeJong and Tucker Gifferson, ranked No. 6 at 120, moving up and winning by technical fall over Taylor Woodyard. That made it 18- 11.

Jay Skogerboe won by fall at 138 pounds and Max Scheffler, ranked No. 7 at 145, earned a 5-2 decision to put New Prague up 27-11.
