Trojan hockey, wrestling and swimmers moving up a class

New Prague High School will be competing with the big kids in nearly all sports starting with the 2017-18 school year.

The Minnesota State High School League announced new competitive sections for the next two years, and New Prague’s growing enrollment moves them into the largest class in all activities except football. The league listed the school’s enrollment at 1,250, an increase of 57 students, or about 4 percent. New Prague is now the 61st largest school in the state.

The announcement was expected, and affects four sports in which New Prague had not already been in the top grouping - boys and girls hockey, girls swimming and diving, and wrestling. In each of these sports, New Prague was placed in Section 2, with teams from the southwest metro (2AA for hockey and swimming and 2AAA for wrestling).

   The new sections are:

Boys hockey - Section 2AA includes Chanhassen, Chaska, Eden Prairie, Holy Family Catholic, Minnetonka, New Prague, Prior Lake and Shakopee.

Girls hockey - Section 2AA includes Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, New Prague, Prior Lake, Shakopee, Bloomington Jefferson, Chaska/Chanhassen and Holy Family/Waconia.

Girls Swimming and Diving - Section 2AA includes Bloomington Jefferson, Bloomington Kennedy, Chanhassen, Chaska, Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, New Prague, Shakopee and Prior Lake.

Wrestling - Section 2AAA includes Apple Valley, Bloomington Jefferson, Burnsville, Eastview, Lakeville North, Lakeville South, New Prague, Prior Lake, Rosemount and Shakopee.

New Prague remains in the same section in all other sports. There were adjustments made to some of these sections:

The MSHSL makes adjustments to sections and classifications every two years, taking into account changes in school enrollment, new programs and changes in cooperative sponsorships.
