Trojans edge East for 1st place at Austin Invitational

The New Prague Trojan girls track team finished on top of a tight battle against Mankato East at the Austin Invitational Saturday.

The Trojans tallied 143 points, with the Cougars getting 140.5. Champlin Park was third with 105, followed by Austin (83.5), Farmington (75.5), Visitation (75.5) and Esko (73).

On Tuesday, the Trojans and Shakopee took part in a JV meet. The Trojans’ meet at Farmington on Thursday, April 20, was rained out.

New Prague will take part in the Missota Relays May 2 at Shakopee. On May 4, New Prague will host Waterville-Elysian-Morristown and St. Clair in a triangular.

Austin Invitational

The Trojans had four first place finishes. Junior Becky Theisen and freshman Britt Rynda were both individual winners and part of the winning 4x400 relay team.

Theisen won the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 5 inches, while Rynda won the triple jump with a distance of 34-2. Both were part of the 4x400-meter relay team, along with Whitney Trecker and Amanda Wagner, that won with a time of 4 minutes, 8.6 seconds.

The other first place finish came from Katelyn Meger, who broke the school record for the second time in as many weeks in the 3,200 with a time of 11:43.8.

Theisen also had a pair of second-place finishes. She won the 200 with a time of 26.0 seconds, and the discus with a throw of 107-2.

Also finishing second for the Trojans were Wagner in the 800 (2:25.3), Erin Hammes in the pole vault (8-6) and the 4x800 relay team of Wagner, Annie Connelly, Jenny Hendricks and Meger (10:97.7).

Finishing fourth for New Prague were Trecker in the 400 (1:03.8), Shelbie Johnson in the 300 hurdles (51.0), and in the triple jump (32-5) and the 4x200 relay team of Marissa Schoenecker, Erin Sand, Amanda Powell and Trecker (1:51.7).

The Trojans’ depth showed with a large number of fifth place finishes. They included freshman Emily R. Bisek in the 100 (13.2), Hendricks in the 3,200 (12:53.8), and in the high jump (5-feet), Kayla Gill in the shot put (30-1), Rynda in the 400 (1:03.9), Maggie Weiers in the discus (98-6) and Wagner in the pole vault (7-6). The 4x100 relay team of Bisek, Sand, Powell and Schoenecker took fifth in 54.2 seconds. Powell was a last-second substitution for Hannah Zelmer, who was injured in the long jump just minutes before the relay began.

Sixth place finishes were turned in by Kit Cross in the shot put (29-8) and Rena Kneeland in the 300 hurdles (52.5).

Taking seventh for the Trojans were Connelly in the 800 (2:40), and Alexis Sherman in the 100 hurdles (18.4).

Charlie Herrmann took eighth in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:51.1.

JV meet

The Trojans and Shakopee took part in a JV meet April 18. Trojans finishing in the top three were:

Pole vault: 1st-Hammes, 2nd-Hallie Tietz

Shot put: 2nd-Cross

Discus: 1st-Weiers, 3rd-Melissa Hrabe

100 hurdles: 2nd-Sylvia Bisek, 3rd-Amanda Floden

100 m.: 2nd-Schoenecker

4x200 relay: 2nd-(Madison Taylor, Rebecca Hanson, Lindsey Pexa, Schoenecker)

4x100 relay: 2nd-(MJ Harty, Sylvia Bisek, Jessica Skluzacek, Shelly Benson)

400 m.: 2nd-Kelsey Kalina

300 hurdles: 1st-Linnea Fitterer

800 m.: 1st-Veronica Kneeland
