Trojans fall in 5 to Hutchinson

Trying to make the magic happen twice in two weeks, the New Prague Trojan volleyball team pushed Hutchinson to five sets. But just when they were on the verge of advancing to the second round of the Section 2AAA tournament, the Tigers staved off four match points and claimed a win over the Trojans Wednesday, Oct. 26, ending New Prague’s season with an 11- 18 record.

On October 11, the Trojans defeated the Tigers in five sets, so despite being seeded 10th and facing the No. 7 seed, the Trojans played with confidence, knowing they could compete with a strong Tiger lineup.

“I thought we were well prepared and played well given their small gym and low ceiling,” Coach Angie Andersen said.

Scores were 25-17, 11-25, 25-21, 18-15, 16-14.

After the Tigers won the first set, the Trojans bounced back with a dominant showing in the second set. Hutch won a tight third set before the Trojans bounced back to tie the match and send it to a decisive fifth set.

New Prague was in command for much of the final set and had match point at 14-12, but the Tigers won the serve back and then served out the match for the 16-14 win.

“It was great match, but really hurts just coming up short,” said Andersen.

“It was by far our best blocking night of the season. Hutchison ran a different line up since the last time we saw them, using a bigger, taller line up, and our players adjusted well. The girls played their hearts out and I couldn’t ask for more.”
