Trojans fall in finale; to face Faribault in 1AAA opener

The New Prague Trojan girls basketball team let a share of the Missota Conference title slip away with a 56-37 loss to Farmington Friday, Feb. 25.

Instead, the Trojans finished the regular season with an 18-8 record, 10-4 in the Missota, where they finished fourth. Farmington, Shakopee and Chanhassen, all Class AAAA schools, finished at 11-3 and tied for the conference title.

New Prague now turns its attention to the Section 1AAA tournament. The Trojans received the No. 1 seed and were scheduled to face No. 8-seed Faribault (2-23) in the first round at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Mar. 2, after this edition of The New Prague Times went to press. Should the Trojans win they will face either Winona or Austin at 7 p.m. Saturday, Mar. 5 at the New Prague gym. The Section 1AAA championship game will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Mar. 11, at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester.

Trojans 87, Storm 78

Four Trojans scored in double figures as New Prague celebrated its senior night with an 87-78 win over Chanhassen Tuesday, Feb. 22.

The win avenged an earlier loss to the Storm.

Junior Anna Rynda and senior Maggie Seter paced the Trojans, scoring 28 and 21 points respectively. Taylor Rookaird added 15 and Makayla Reimers scored 12 points, all in the first half. The junior forward sat much of the second half with foul trouble.

Sara Rookaird added 7 points and Lauren Carr 4.

New Prague shot an impressive 86 percent (31 of 36) from the free throw line, with Rynda making 10 of 11.

Reimers and Sara Rookaird both had seven rebounds for the Trojans. Rynda had five assists and four steals.

New Prague led 42-35 at halftime.

Tigers 56, Trojans 37

After scoring 87 points three days earlier, the Trojans' shooting went cold as Farmington held New Prague to just 12 points in the first half. The Tigers led 28-12 at halftime and finished with a 56-37 win.

The Trojans had just three field goals in the first half and 14 for the game. They continued their good free throw shooting, making seven of eight from the field

Taylor Rookaird led the Trojans with 10 points. Other Trojans scoring were Rynda (9), Seter (8), Reimers (6) and Sara Rookaird (4).

Reimers had eight rebounds for New Prague.
